Balsa Wood Bridge
Introductions
The intent of this project is to design and build an articulating bridge which can be raised and lowered constructed from balsa wood. The need for this bridge comes from the state of the world during this pandemic in which a project that has engineering merit can still be build while socially distancing.
Analysis Summary
Analysis 2E
In order to accurately analyze a bridge, it must be assumed that the bridge is in static equilibrium. This assumption allows for force analysis to take place upon the structure and allows for forces placed on individual members to also be solved. forces in members are what is required in order to determine stresses and ultimately determine the dimensions of the bridge members.
Testing
Summary
The aspects of the bridge that will be tested are details that can be found in the requirements section of the proposal. The three main aspects of testing of the bridge structure include the ability to hold at minimum 20kg of mass loaded centrally to the bridge, the bridge weight being below 85g, and the bridge deck allowing for a 32mm x 25mm block simulating a vehicle to pass through it uninterrupted.
